Recipes For Using Coffee in Food

Those that love coffee know how delicious the many variations on the drink can be. But, using coffee as an ingredient in food preparation can be just as delightful. You may be familiar with the use of coffee in desserts. However, its culinary additions are not just limited to sweets. Coffee has been used in meat glazes, chili, and even roasts.

Any time a recipe calls for ground coffee, it’s best to buy freshly ground beans or grind your own for immediate use. If a recipe calls for liquid coffee, it is best to brew it just prior to use. Coffee brewed for use in recipes is often much stronger than you would care to drink. With that said here are a few great recipes using coffee.

Coffee Flavored Meatloaf Sauce

This recipe is for Australian style meatloaf which is gaining in popularity outside of Australia.

To make the sauce, a tablespoon of instant coffee is added to a quarter cup of water and set aside.

In a bowl add a half cup of ketchup, a quarter cup of a favorite dry red wine, and an equal amount of Worcestershire sauce. Two tablespoons of vinegar, an ounce of margarine, and two tablespoons of lemon juice with some brown sugar round out the mixture. Finally, add the coffee and mix thoroughly.

Bake the meat for for 30 minutes, add the sauce, and bake for more 45 minutes at 375F.

Espresso Brownies

These are delightful for those who love coffee and chocolate.

In a sauce pan, heat a cup of sugar, a quarter teaspoon of salt, and a stick and a half of butter. Add a teaspoon of vanilla and four ounces of chopped, semi-sweet chocolate and stir until well melted. Next, add a tablespoon of your favorite finely ground dark-roast coffee.

Stir until everything is well mixed.

Then, transfer everything into a mixing bowl and let cool for a few minutes.

While still warm, fold in three eggs, a cup of flour and pour or scoop the mixture into a baking pan. Bake for 30 minutes at 350F or until done and set out to cool.

Black Russian Cake

Pick your favorite dark chocolate cake mix and add a cup of vegetable oil, a package of instant chocolate pudding, four eggs, and a half cup of creme de cacao. Now add a cup of your favorite Russian coffee. (1 oz vodka, 1/2 oz Kahlua, 5 oz hot black coffee.)

Beat until smooth and pour into a cake pan, then bake at 350F for 45 minutes or until done.
